Custom Trophy Design: Samples and Prototypes

When investing in custom trophy design, one of the biggest concerns is knowing exactly what you’re going to receive. Will the design look as good in real life as it does on screen? Will the quality meet expectations? And most importantly, will the final product reflect your brand in the right way? With samples or prototypes, the team at Gaudio can help you find the answers.

Why order a custom trophy prototype?

Custom projects naturally involve a level of uncertainty, especially when detail and presentation are critical.

In custom trophy design, small elements can have a big impact. Our team of expert designers and account managers have over 20 years experience with creating perfect awards, but we understand the importance of making sure everything is absolutely perfect when it comes to a physical representation of your brand. We’ve heard lots of concerns, including:

  • Design details not translating as expected
  • Materials or finishes appearing differently in real life
  • Proportions or scale feeling slightly off
  • Branding not aligning perfectly with your identity

Even though we provide fully computer-rendered 3D designs with every quote, there’s still real value in seeing a physical piece. Screens can’t always capture how materials feel, how finishes react to light, or the true sense of scale and weight. While we endeavour to make renders as accurate as possible, a sample or prototype bridges that gap, giving you full confidence in the final result.

The 3D printing process

Samples vs Prototypes: What’s the Difference?

Both samples and prototypes play an important role in the custom trophy design process, but they serve different purposes.

Samples:

  • Pre-made sample pieces already produced, such as anodised metal or printed acrylic
  • Not customised to your brand or brief
  • Used to assess materials, finish, and build quality
  • Quick to dispatch and cost-effective

Prototypes:

  • Created from scratch based on your brief
  • Fully bespoke and tailored to your design
  • Includes a design approval stage before production
  • Represents the final product as accurately as possible

In simple terms, a sample shows you how well something is made, while a prototype shows you exactly what will be made.

How the Prototype Process Works

Our custom trophy design process is built to give you complete clarity from concept through to production.

  • We start with your brief, understanding your brand, event, and requirements
  • A design is developed and shared with you for approval
  • Feedback and refinements are made if needed
  • Once approved, the prototype is produced using final production methods

This structured approach ensures:

  • No guesswork
  • Full visibility before manufacturing
  • A smooth transition into larger production runs

The Same Quality and Care at Every Stage

Prototypes are not treated as test pieces, they are produced to the same standards as the final order.

You can expect:

  • The same level of attention to design detail
  • The same high-quality materials and manufacturing processes
  • The same expert guidance from dedicated account managers

Where appropriate, we can also create a pared-down prototype to demonstrate specific manufacturing techniques or features. This allows you to validate key aspects of your custom trophy design while managing time before your event.

Choosing the Right Option for Your Project

The choice between a sample and a prototype depends on your stage in the process and what you’d like to learn about the trophies we create at Gaudio.

You may choose a sample if you want to:

  • Quickly assess quality and craftsmanship
  • Review materials and finishes in person
  • Explore options early in your project

You may choose a prototype if you want to:

  • See your exact custom trophy design brought to life
  • Confirm proportions, branding, and detailing
  • Move into production with complete confidence

Both options are designed to reduce risk and ensure your final trophies meet expectations in both design and quality.

FAQs - Samples and Prototypes

What is the difference between a sample and a prototype in custom trophy design?

A sample is a pre-made piece used to demonstrate the quality, materials, and finish of our work, but it isn’t tailored to your brand or brief. A sample is not a trophy, it is a material sample. A prototype is created from scratch, based on your existing custom trophy design, and includes a design approval stage before production begins.

Will the prototype match the final trophy exactly?

Yes, your prototype is produced using the same materials, processes, and level of craftsmanship as the final order. This ensures your custom trophy design is accurately represented, giving you a clear and reliable preview so you can move forward with confidence before committing to full production.

Can I request changes after seeing the prototype?

Yes, refining the design is an important part of the custom trophy design process. After reviewing your prototype, you can request adjustments to details such as materials, finishes, or layout. This ensures the final product aligns perfectly with your expectations before moving ahead with a larger production run.

Do prototypes take longer than samples?

Yes, prototypes typically take longer because they are fully bespoke and involve design development, approval, and production from scratch. Samples are pre-made and ready to send, so they can be dispatched quickly. The additional time for a prototype ensures your custom trophy design is accurate and production-ready.

Blank

When you order a blank trophy, it will arrive without any personalised details. The trophy is blank for you to add your own personalisation, or use as a decorative piece.

Engraved

Engraving etches your design into the surface of the trophy.

Printed

Print is colour-matched. Based on variations in computer and screen settings, and manufacturing tolerances, colours may appear differently to what you see on screen.

Personalise Online

Select your layout using the dropdown menu, then enter your details. The live proof shows you an approximate visual of how your trophy will look when it’s engraved. Once you’ve added the details you want and purchased your trophy, we’ll begin manufacture right away.

Please note: The live render is an estimate of how your trophy will look, and the final result may vary in size, colour and placement.

Gaudio Proofing Service

With the Gaudio Proofing Service, simply add your chosen trophy to your cart and checkout as normal. A member of the team will be in touch to collect the required details, and we’ll send you proofs to approve before manufacture. Delivery time excludes proofing.
