How to Turn a Trophy Idea into a Design Brief

What do the FIFA World Cup, the Brit Awards trophy, and the Vince Lombardi trophy all have in common? Creativity! Each one began as a simple spark of imagination that evolved into an iconic design that’s now recognised across the world. And that same creative journey begins every time somebody approaches us at Gaudio Awards with an exciting new idea.

Whether you’re picturing a twisting aluminium helix that captures your brand’s dynamic spirit or a laser‑cut acrylic design that’s illuminated from within, it all starts with a clear and well-thought-out trophy design brief.

Here’s how to turn your initial idea into a clear and exciting brief that sets your trophy project up for success.

Why Do You Need a Trophy Design Brief?

Every great idea needs a great plan. Lots of people come to us with an exciting concept, but putting that into words (and eventually, into aluminium, acrylic, or wood!) can be a challenge. That’s where a trophy design brief comes in.

Once you’ve submitted your enquiry, our Account Managers will work closely with you to shape your ideas into a creative brief that makes sense to our designers. The clearer your brief, the faster we can translate your idea into an award that will truly wow your audience. Think of your brief as the bridge between your vision and the finished trophy your winners will hold up in triumph.

Defining the Purpose Behind Your Award

Before you start diving into shapes and materials, start with the why. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is your trophy for a standout event, a lifetime achievement, or an annual celebration?
  • Who are your winners? Are they individuals, teams, businesses, or charities?
  • What’s the feeling you want your trophy to convey? Prestige, creativity, innovation, or fun?

Knowing this information will help us design a dazzling trophy that perfectly fits your occasion. We’ll also take all the practicalities of your event into account – for example, we’ll often use non-reflective materials that work with studio lighting for TV awards, but we might add a lighter and more playful touch to children’s awards. Whatever your event, we’ll design each and every trophy for its moment in the spotlight.

Shaping the Look and Feel of Your Trophy Design

Here’s where the fun really begins! Share your trophy ideas with us to help us get a sense of direction. Even if you’re not sure exactly what you want, start thinking about:

  • Materials. Let us know which trophy materials you like the look of, whether it’s brushed aluminium, warm wood, or vivid acrylic.
  • Shapes. Would you prefer something sleek and minimalist, or complex and experimental? Your logo, symbol, or tagline could actually inspire the shape itself.
  • Finishes. From glossy and polished to matte and smart, or even glittery and bold, there are endless finishes to choose from.
  • Style. Whether you’re after a modern vibe or something more classic, our experienced trophy design team can help bring your vision to fruition.
  • Branding. Share your brand guidelines or event website with us. We can match your colours and replicate your logo, or even sculpt it directly into the design.
  • Size. Do you need something grand and eye-catching or small and elegant? The scale can transform the overall feel of your award.

Once we’ve got a clear understanding of your taste and tone, we can design something that feels exactly like you.

Practical Things to Include in Your Trophy Design Brief

Budget

Let us know what budget you’re working with. We can craft truly stunning trophies at every price point. For example, if you love the idea of gold accents but can’t stretch your spend too far, we can look at options like premium gold plating, gold paint, gold acrylic, and gold print.

Quantity

We also need to know how many trophies you’re looking for. Whether you’re after a handful of trophies or a few hundred, we can recommend the most cost-effective solution for your needs. For example, you might want to order ahead for future years to help save money in the long run.

Timeline

This is arguably the most important part! Tell us your event date and when you need the trophies delivered for, and we’ll make sure that everything arrives in time to shine.

Here’s a quick checklist of what we need to create your free custom award design:

  • Event name
  • Event date
  • Quantity needed
  • Logo or brand guidelines
  • Personalisation requirements (category titles, individual names etc.)
  • Notes on what you do and don’t like

Blank

When you order a blank trophy, it will arrive without any personalised details. The trophy is blank for you to add your own personalisation, or use as a decorative piece.

Engraved

Engraving etches your design into the surface of the trophy.

Printed

Print is colour-matched. Based on variations in computer and screen settings, and manufacturing tolerances, colours may appear differently to what you see on screen.

Personalise Online

Select your layout using the dropdown menu, then enter your details. The live proof shows you an approximate visual of how your trophy will look when it’s engraved. Once you’ve added the details you want and purchased your trophy, we’ll begin manufacture right away.

Please note: The live render is an estimate of how your trophy will look, and the final result may vary in size, colour and placement.

Gaudio Proofing Service

With the Gaudio Proofing Service, simply add your chosen trophy to your cart and checkout as normal. A member of the team will be in touch to collect the required details, and we’ll send you proofs to approve before manufacture. Delivery time excludes proofing.
