Bespoke Trophies

Printed vs Engraved Trophies: Which is Better for Your Event?

Picture the moment: the winner’s name is announced, the room bursts into applause, and the trophy is placed in their hands. In that moment, every decision you’ve made about every detail on the trophy, from the branding to the personalisation, comes together to create something your winners will be proud to display for years to come.

That’s why choosing between printing and engraving is such an important part of the design process. It shapes how your award looks, how it feels in the winner’s hands, how your branding is presented, and how memorable that winning moment becomes.

So, should you choose engraved trophies with a classic, timeless finish? Or go bold with vibrant printed trophies? Both can create stand-out personalised awards, but they deliver very different results. Here’s how to choose the right finish for your event.

What Are Printed Trophies?

Printed trophies are personalised using UV printing. Full-colour ink is applied directly onto the award, which opens up a huge amount of creative freedom for vibrant, brand-led designs.

Printed trophies are ideal for acrylic, metal, wood, and selected glass and crystal trophies, allowing you to bring colour, gradients, photographic detail, sponsor logos, and complex graphics directly into the design. They deliver serious impact for industry awards, conferences, creative ceremonies, sports tournaments, and high-energy events, working well on stage, under lights, on camera, and across social media.

What Are Engraved Trophies?

Engraved trophies are personalised by etching text, logos, or artwork directly into the surface of the award. This creates a permanent, precise finish that feels refined, professional, and worthy of achievement.

Engraving works beautifully across glass, crystal, wood, and metal, making it a strong choice for corporate awards, long-service recognition, sporting trophies, and high-end presentations. It’s especially effective for showcasing simple logos, monochrome artwork, award titles, recipient names, and meaningful messaging.

The Differences Between Each Finish

Appearance

Printing:

Printing is much louder and bolder than engraving. It allows for full-colour graphics, creative layouts, and stronger visual contrast, making it ideal for trophies that need to grab attention fast.

Engraving:

Engraving allows you to create instant impact, but in a subtler, understated way. Because the design is etched into the material, it gives you a refined finish that sits permanently within the material itself.

Branding

Printing:

If your brand identity relies on colour, then print is usually the more powerful option. Full-colour logos, gradients, and detailed graphics can be reproduced with clarity, helping your trophies feel fully aligned with your event and branding.

Engraving:

Engraving can look fantastic if your branding is simple. It works best with clean logos, monochrome artwork, and text-led designs where accuracy and precision matters much more than colour.

Durability

Printing:

Printing also provides a durable, modern finish, especially when used for vibrant presentation pieces. You can adapt the design depending on how the award will be used, handled, or displayed, with specific options for outdoor use or heavier handling.

Engraving:

Engraving is an extremely durable option because the personalisation becomes part of the trophy surface. It won’t peel or fade over time, meaning your winners can display and treasure their trophy for years to come.

Can You Combine Print and Engraving?

You can absolutely combine print and engraving when you design a custom trophy with Gaudio Awards. You don’t have to treat print and engraving as an either/or decision – we can combine them in the same way we combine different materials, shapes, colours, and finishes.

For example, you can include a crisp engraved detail for depth and texture, while also featuring vibrant pops of print to bring your branding to life. A great example of this is the UEA Innovation Prize: we combined engraved wood with printed acrylic to create maximum visual impact, while still staying firmly on brand.

The good news is that our bespoke trophy design service is completely free of charge. Our in-house designers can talk you through personalisation options at any stage of the design process, and help you choose the right finish for your event.

How to Choose the Right Finish For Your Event

1) Think About Your Branding

Always start with your branding. If including full-colour logos or sponsor graphics is non-negotiable, then print is the way forward. Our team can then shape the material, form, and finish around your brand identity.

2) Consider Where the Trophy Will Live

Next, think about the award’s life after the event. Will it sit in a cabinet for years, travel between winners, or appear in photos and social media posts? A perpetual trophy that’s used year-after-year might call for engraved name plants, while a bold printed trophy might be perfect for winners who want to display it proudly or share it online.

3) Choose Your Materials

Finally, you need to consider your material options. Glass, crystal, wood, metal, and acrylic all bring different possibilities, and your chosen finish should work with the material rather than against it.

FAQs

Are engraved trophies more premium than printed trophies?

Not necessarily. Both options can feel premium when they’re designed with the right material and event in mind. When you design a bespoke trophy with Gaudio Awards, we’ll advise you on the perfect personalisation method to elevate your award.

Do printed trophies fade over time?

Printed trophies are created using UV printed inks, which are designed to be fade resistant. The ink is cured with UV light to create bright, long-lasting colour, making it an ideal choice for vibrant presentation pieces and branded awards.

Can crystal and glass trophies be printed as well as engraved?

Yes, certain crystal and glass trophies can be printed as well as engraved, allowing you to combine the elegance of glass or crystal with the impact of full-colour branding. Explore our printed glass and crystal trophies to see what’s possible.
