A Trophy Worthy of the British Grand Prix Weekend

Creating a custom darts trophy worth celebrating

Every year, the British Grand Prix transforms Silverstone into one of the UK’s biggest sporting destinations. Alongside the action on the track, this year fans could enjoy a packed programme of entertainment throughout the weekend, including A Night at the Darts at the circuit’s BOXPARK Trackside Fan Park.

Featuring some of the biggest names in the sport—including Luke Littler, Luke Humphries, Michael van Gerwen and Fallon Sherrock—the exhibition was one of the highlights of this years Grand Prix weekend. As the closing event of the festival, the winner’s trophy needed to reflect the same sense of excitement and prestige as the occasion itself.

The brief was to create a premium trophy that would look impressive on stage, photograph beautifully during the presentation and become a fitting prize for some of the world’s most recognisable darts players.

Combining Darts and Motorsport in One Design

The project began with a clear objective: create a premium trophy worthy of presenting to the winner of A Night at the Darts during the Silverstone Grand Prix weekend.

The client wanted an award that would bring together the visual identities of two very different sports, remaining in keeping with the Silverstone brand. The design needed to celebrate darts first and foremost, while incorporating subtle motorsport influences to reflect its unique setting at Silverstone. The base also needed space for details about the event.

Alongside these creative requirements, the brief called for a trophy with a premium metallic appearance and a substantial feel in the hand—qualities that help create a memorable moment for the winner on stage, and reinforce the significance of the event.

With the brief established, the next stage was transforming those ideas into a trophy that could not only capture the client’s vision but also be manufactured to the highest standard.

Turning an AI Concept into a Bespoke Trophy

One aspect that made this project particularly interesting was how it began. As well as supplying written ideas, the client provided an AI-generated concept showing the direction they wanted the finished trophy to take.

AI-generated trophy concepts are becoming increasingly common, and they can be an excellent starting point for discussions. However, many would create challenges if they reached the manufacturing stage without any design input. Floating components, impossible geometry, unsupported structures and unrealistic materials may produce eye-catching images, but they often can’t be transformed into physical products without significant redesign.

Fortunately, this concept was different.

For this project, a well-considered AI concept allowed the finished trophy to remain remarkably faithful to the client’s original vision.

As our design team explained:

Custom Darts Trophy Silverstone

“We receive plenty of AI generated trophy concepts these days, most of which are generally un-manufacturable, with floating sections, optical illusions, impossible geometry and little consideration for materials or construction.

Every now and then though, we get one through which is completely achievable. Working on these designs is always enjoyable because there’s no compromise. Often we can create an award very similar to their concept, which is the reality of developing AI-based ideas into physical, manufacturable products (at least until we can develop anti-gravity awards!).

We believe making the gap between customers’ expectation and the delivered product as small as possible is key to delivering awards people love. This was one of those ‘small gap’ awards where expectation aligned with reality for A Night at the Darts at Silverstone.”

From Digital Concept to Centre Stage

Once the design was approved, our production team transformed the concept into a premium, presentation-ready trophy using a combination of modern manufacturing techniques and skilled craftsmanship.

We began by 3D printing the main body of the award, the classic dart shape, allowing us to accurately reproduce the intricate details of the design. 3D printed trophies offer intricaies in the surface design that won’t be lost or dulled after finishing. After printing, our team carefully finished the surface by hand, creating the smooth foundation needed for the next stages of production. The piece was fully painted in silver for a glossy final look.

We then fixed solid aluminium flight pieces into the 3D print, which had vibrant UV-printed Union Jack graphics to achieve crisp, durable branding. Finally, we mounted the award onto a solid metal base, adding stability, weight and the premium feel expected of a championship trophy.
