Bespoke TrophiesUEA Innovation and Impact Awards
Last year, the University of East Anglia received their highest ever ranking in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, coming in at 13th place. They started this year celebrating even more success with the Innovation and Impact Awards, held in their very own Sainsbury Centre for Virtual Arts.
There were two vital elements for these awards. The gold ‘flecks’, as seen in the event branding, and the use of wood, curved to resemble the shape mirrored in UEA’s logo.
The University of East Anglia is renown for it’s research, with 82% being deemed world leading or internationally excellent by the Research Excellence Framework in 2014.
The UEA Innovation and Impact awards celebrate staff and students that have ‘shown a strong commitment to innovation and impact’. Fiona Lettice, UEA’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, said this about the night: ‘These awards celebrate and showcase UEA’s pioneering research and innovation’*.
The awards saw Professor Graham Finlayson and Professor David Russell announced as UEA Innovation Fellows.
Host Glen Webster presents to winners Professor Doug Yu, Dr. Georgina Pope, and Dr. Kat Bruce of Naturemetrics, who received the award for Outstanding Commercialisation of Technology.
The intent with the final designs was to create two complimentary pieces; one award for winners, and an acrylic tablet for finalists to keep as recognition of their achievement.
The Final Product
Both pieces used multi-sided foiling to print the decorative branding.
The UEA logo was also printed on the tablets, as were the details for the finalist categories. Printing is an adaptable choice for acrylic tablets, making customisation flexible and easy, without being heavy-handed. The result was an acrylic tablet with a minimal, but beautiful and on-brand design.
These tablets were partnered with larger bespoke awards, constructed using a mix of wood and acrylic. The cut acrylic was sandwiched between two pieces of wood with UEA’s signature curve, an innovative award for an innovative celebration.
Gaudio sources wood that is FSC Certified, in keeping with UEA’s commitment to improving sustainability. The engraving on the wood makes for a sophisticated finishing touch.
The design of these awards used a blend of elegant wood finish with modern printed acrylic, to make a pair of awards that would stand out on the night.
