What is a Vector File?

One of the first questions you'll be asked when you contact us is "do you have your logo in vector format?" But what is a Vector file and why do we need it?

What does Vector mean?

There are two types of image file: vector files and raster files. Raster files are the more commonly known and widely used, but vector files are far more useful for us when designing your trophy and ensuring the best possible print and engraving quality.

Raster Image

A raster image is made up of small squares called pixels. They are the most commonly used and known image format and include jpeg, png, gif and tif. Raster images are used in photography and for images on websites. The problem with raster images is that they lose quality when scaled.

Vector Image

A vector file is a type of digital image file that uses mathematical formulas to create shapes, lines, and colours. Unlike raster files, vector files can be resized without losing any quality. This makes them perfect for logos, icons, and other graphics that need to look sharp at any size. Examples of vector file formats include SVG, AI, and EPS. Vector files can be edited in programs such as Adobe Illustrator and can’t be viewed by default on most PC’s.

Why do we need vector files for design and quote?

Before our trophy designers start work on your custom creation, we will always ask for a vector file of your logo or any branding you want included in the design. There are two main reasons we need a vector image:

Print Quality

A vector file guarantees sharp images, perfect colour replication and no distortion. Raster images can be printed in certain situations but the quality cannot be guaranteed.

Editability

Your logo or branding is often the start point of our design journey. Having a vector file allows us to:

  1. Easily change the colour
By changing the colour we can show your logo in colour print, engraved, in mono or inverted.
  2. Extract selective elements
A vector allows us to extract specific elements from your logo (e.g. a letter, design element or shape) to create an iconic trophy design.
  3. Offset profiles
Profiling a logo in acrylic or aluminium is one of our most popular options. In order to achieve this, we need a vector so that we can quickly and easily offset the shape of your logo to create a stunning profiled design.

Where can I find a vector file?

If you have a marketing, design or branding department, they are most likely to have the vector files required.

If your logo or branding was produced by an external designer or agency, they will have vector files available. Alternatively, if you have any pdf files of your branding (brand guidelines, event brochures, invitations, annual corporate reports etc) please send those over as they often contain the vector files needed.

What if I can't get a vector file?

If you are unable to obtain a vector file, please don’t worry – we can often still help. There are a variety of reasons why a vector may not be available including:

  • The original vector has been lost or is with an outside agency (e.g. a coat of arms)
  • A vector does not exist because it was created as a Raster (e.g. a photo or Photoshop logo).

If the raster image provided is of a high enough quality, we may be able to trace the image to create a vector. Alternatively we may be able to redraw the raster image, but this is likely to be chargeable.

It is possible to proceed with design and manufacture with a Raster image, but it will limit the design options we can offer. Our Designers and Account Managers can discuss this with you should we be unable to obtain a vector.
